The Art of Nature<\/em> offers a personal account of Philip Davey’s artistic career over four decades, from the beginnings of his interest in plein air<\/em> painting, to his work as a studio painter, and his move into printmaking and ceramics. With an extensive catalogue of images, accompanied by reflections from the artist on the ideas and techniques represented in his works, the book shows both the evolution of Davey’s work and his long-running interests in themes of the natural world, discovery, and loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philip Davey’s story is one of migration, discovery and connection to the natural world. Migrating to Australia as a child, Philip discovered a new continent, its extraordinary flora and fauna, and later, became fascinated by the history of colonial settlement and its impact. As Philip discovered within himself the drive to create, he turned to the natural world for inspiration, reflecting a deep connection to, and respect for, the land of his adopted country. The Art of Nature is the story of a prolific self-taught artist and his commitment to the landscape and environment of this wondrous land.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

To mark the book’s publication, Australian Galleries held a survey exhibition of Philip Davey\u2019s work presenting a comprehensive\u00a0series of paintings and ceramics, both fresh from the artist\u2019s studio as well as works spanning his prolific career. Gavin Fry is a writer, artist and museum professional with fifty years experience working in curatorial and management positions in Australian museums, galleries, and educational institutions.
